About the project

In the climate project “Schlegel”, Pina Earth transforms 471 hectares made up of 84% uniform spruce forest in Thuringia into a near-natural biodiverse forest. By doing so, the project avoids and removes over 27,000 tons of CO₂ emissions over 30 years from the atmosphere, preparing the forest for future climatic conditions. The following activities are financed and implemented as part of the climate project: (1) planting multiple diverse, climate-resilient tree species such as fir, douglas fir, red alder, beech, birch, chestnut and maple, (2) support the natural rejuvenation of young trees, (3) improve wildlife management By implementing these activities, the Schlegel project drives regional climate protection, while strengthening biodiversity and contributing to society reaching the Paris Agreement. The project ‘Schlegel’ is reaching the following KPIs: - 27.187 tCO2 removed during the project runtime - 6 new species introduced - 99 % biodiversity increase reached (Shannon Diversity Index) Monitoring: The credits get issued as ex-ante credits in the year 2023 and will convert over the project time into ex-post certificates. The monitoring of the project takes place every 3-5 years as a review of all relevant information from the project proponent using remote sensing and/or inventory data. Furthermore, parameters get updated on a regular basis due to new scientific research findings. Co-Benefits: SDG 3 - Good Health and Wellbeing: Forests filter air, with one hectare of forest filtering 60 t of dust per year. SDG 4 - Quality Education: Education on effective climate action in forests for forest owners, carbon buyers and stakeholders. SDG 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation: Clean drinking water provided, as microorganisms in biodiverse forest soil filters rain water. In addition, the forest soil can absorb precipitation like a sponge and thus provide natural reservoirs. SDG 12 - Responsible Production and Consumption: Wood as regenerative material produced, which can also be used as a sustainable alternative for building purposes. Pina Earth’s projects require FSC/ PEFC certification and promote responsible wood production. SDG 13 - Climate Action: 27,187 tonnes of CO2e sequestered during the project crediting period. Advanced monitoring ensures every 3 - 5 years that the projected emissions were sequestered in reality. SDG 15 - Life on Land: 99 % biodiversity increase (Shannon Diversity Index) and new species introduced in the project area. This is essential to ensure intact ecosystems, ensure health, as well as economic and social stability. Combining a digital certification process with high resolution forest data and climate models allows for lower entry barriers, higher quality and project focus on climate-resiliency. By offering small- and medium-sized forest owners access to the voluntary carbon market, we improve market efficiency, inclusivity and removal outcomes. To do so, we use the latest technologies and scientific approaches from the emerging field of climate modeling. The groundbreaking character of the research in this field was recognized with the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics for Syukuro Manabe's modeling of Earth’s climate and global warming. We developed a brand-new, AI-based simulation that allows us to predict forest growth and carbon stocks under climate change impacts for more than 30 years into the future. This simulation takes into account varying combinations of tree species and provides detailed recommendations for forest owners to adapt their forests in the most climate-resilient way.

Retired carbon credits shown in this climate portfolio are verified. Portfolios might contain: (a) future credits (commitments), that will be verified once the retirement becomes available; (b) credits that were not purchased through the CEEZER marketplace, and therefore did not undergo our quality screening; (c) credits that originate from registries that we do not support.
