1. Before the implementation of the project, local communities in the project location used fossil fuel and/or non-renewable biomass (Hereinafter referred to as “NRB”) to boil water for purification. Therefore, the baseline scenario is that fossil fuel and/or NRB is used to boil water as means of water purification in the absence of the project activity. As a result, water purification through boiling with wood made local people vulnerable to the negative effects of poor indoor air quality. Boiling water with wood also resulted in significant greenhouse gas emissions through the use of non-renewable biomass, causing deforestation and threatening biodiversity. 2. The project is located in Southern Province of Rwanda. 3. The VPAs, which are the VPA 01-06 for GS 10959 “Safe Water Programme in Africa and Asia”, will repair 251 boreholes spread over Muhanga District, Kamonyi District, Nyanza Distrct, Nyamagabe Distrct and Ruhango Distrct. 4. According to approved PDD, annual emission reduction achieved by the project activity is 34,531tCO2e.
